The United Nations Security Council Thursday formally approved the nomination of former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres to be the next secretary-general. 

The UN Security Council unanimously nominated a former prime minister of Portugal for the office of secretary-general.Their recommendation has been sent to the 193-member General Assembly for his appointment.Antonio Guterres served as the Portuguese prime minister from 1995 to 2002.
